damp & mould

What is Damp?

Damp is the build up of excess moisture in a building’s structure. In the UK’s naturally humid climate, homes are particularly susceptible to damp, which can appear in various forms:

  • Rising Damp: Moisture that travels up from the ground, typically through walls and floors.
  • Penetrating Damp: Caused by water seeping through exterior walls due to issues like damaged brickwork, roof leaks, or clogged gutters.
  • Condensation: The most common form of damp, often caused by poor ventilation, where warm, moisture-filled air cools on surfaces.

What is Mould?

Mould is a type of fungus that grows in damp conditions. It thrives on walls, ceilings, and hidden areas where moisture lingers. Mould can vary in colour, from green, yellow, and white to the more concerning black mould (Stachybotrys chartarum), which is particularly hazardous.

Are Damp and Mould Dangerous?

Yes, both damp and mould can pose significant risks to health and property.

Health Risks

Prolonged exposure to damp environments and mould spores can impact respiratory health, especially in vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and those with asthma or allergies. Symptoms may include:

  • Coughing, sneezing, and respiratory irritation
  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Asthma attacks and worsening allergies

Black mould, in particular, is known for releasing mycotoxins, which can be more harmful than other types of mould.

Property Risks

Damp and mould not only impact the health of residents but also compromise the structural integrity of a property. Key risks include:

  • Damage to walls, ceilings, and flooring: Damp can weaken building materials, leading to cracks, flaking paint, and warped flooring.
  • Decreased property value: Persistent damp and visible mould can affect your property’s value and deter potential buyers.
  • Increased heating bills: Damp can make a home feel colder, forcing residents to turn up the heating and driving up energy costs.

How Damp and Mould Affect UK Homes

The UK’s cool, damp climate creates ideal conditions for both damp and mould, especially in older homes with solid walls and limited insulation. Homes that lack proper ventilation or have unaddressed leaks are especially vulnerable, and even modern properties can be affected without adequate moisture control.

In addition to health and structural risks, UK residents may also see increased maintenance costs due to damp and mould, as untreated issues often lead to repeated repairs.
